Deacon Matthew Newsome was ordained for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte in 2018.

He has served as the Catholic Campus Minister at Western Carolina University since 2008. He holds a Masters degree in Theology from Holy Apostles College & Seminary where he is currently pursuing a second MA in Sacred Scripture. In addition to his work in campus ministry, Deacon Matt also serves in the Office of Catechetical Formation for the Diocese of Charlotte.

He is the author of The Devout Life: A Modern Guide to Practical Holiness with St. Francis de Sales (Sophia Institute Press, 2023). He writes a monthly column for the Catholic News Herald and his writings have also appeared in The Deacon, Envoy, This Rock (now Catholic Answers Magazine), Homiletic and Pastoral Review, and online at Dappled Things and Catholic Exchange.

An adult convert to the Catholic faith, he was baptized in the Jubilee Year 2000, the same year that he married his wife, Joannie. They have seven children and live on a little plot of land in the mountains of North Carolina that they share with a small flock of heritage sheep, a smattering of chickens, and one sweet old donkey.
